The Musée des Augustins, Toulouse's museum of fine art, presents from 21st November 2015, a unique exhibition around fantasy figures in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century. Figures of fantasy have yet to be widely studied as a subject in their own right within art history. The term brings together paintings illustrating the fascination the human face and body held for European art for more than two centuries.

The paintings all focus on human passions and emotions; they offer us an intimacy with their subjects and evoke universal themes, always astonishingly modern, such as the appearance of feelings, the ambivalence of the human being or questions of gender. Far from the art of portraiture and its constraints of commission work or fashion, this exhibition sings the praises of freedom, inventiveness and virtuosity in painting.
