The Musée des Augustins of Toulouse presents, from 10 December 2016 to 17 April 2017, Fenêtres sur cours, the first ever exhibition to focus on inner courtyards, a theme often depicted in landscape and architecture painting. Ninety works dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth century have been sourced from public and private collections in France and abroad.

Windows, those contrivances through which the artist sees the world, constitute a complementary and perhaps more familiar theme.

The pieces chosen for the exhibition illustrate these themes without giving preference to any particular school or movement. Discover atria, patios, cloisters, palace courts, farmyards and city courtyards painted by Vredeman de Vries, Hubert Robert, Corot, Boudin, Bonnard, and Rusiñol among others. Deserted or populous, these courtyards constitute a poetic exploration of landscape, real and imaginary architecture, and stories great and small that tell, in essence, of humanity.
