The guided visits are geared towards the general public, and are led by local lecturers in history of art. They have a simple, lively approach to art history and apply it directly to the works themselves.

Subjects of the visits

  • Un couvent devenu musée (A Monastery-turned-Museum)

The Augustine monastery as a whole from 1309 to the present day: the evolution and change of one of Toulouse's historical monuments.

  • Les chefs-d'œuvre du musée (The Museum's Masterpieces)

This visit covers the main paintings and sculptures in the Musée des Augustins: major Romanesque sculptures (the works from la Daurade) and Gothic sculptures (the Rieux cycle and Nostre-Dame de Grasse), as well as paintings from the Classical Period to the beginning of the 20th Century, from Rubens to Toulouse-Lautrec.

  • L'art des sculpteurs romans (The Art of the Romanesque Sculptors)

Noteworthy finds from la Daurade, Saint-Sernin and Saint-Etienne make up one of the loveliest collections of Romanesque sculpture in the world, providing a real overview of this period.

  • L'art gothique (Gothic Art)

From the expressiveness of the Maître de Rieux's works to the elegance of Nostre-Dame de Grasse, the museum's Gothic collections illustrate the upheavals in faith and society in the 13th to 15th Centuries.

  • De Delacroix à Rodin, peinture et sculpture du XIX siècle (From Delacroix to Rodin, paintings and sculptures of XIXe century)

  • L'art du portrait (Portraiture)

Whether idealist or realist in style, the portrait mirrors the aspirations of each and every age. From 14th Century recumbent tomb effigies to Impressionist portraits, the museum's collections bear witness to the diversity of portraiture.

  • La peinture italienne du Pérugin à Guardi (Italian Painting from Perugino to Guardi)

Set in a city rich in links with Italy, the Musée des Augustins' Italian collection provides an in-depth view of transalpine painting. There are masterpieces representing the greatest names (Perugino, Guerchin, Guido Reni and Guardi), whilst the church pictures of the 17th Century are particularly representative of that period and demonstrate its astonishing variety of styles, from Caravaggism to Classicism and Baroque.

  • La Femme dans l'art (Women in Art)

Sensual Salome, impetuous Judith or the immaculate Virgin: throughout art history women have usually been portrayed by male artists, but there are many different themes that make for great variety in their representations.

  • Le paysage ou la nature apprivoisée (Landscape or nature under control).

  • Images et pouvoirs du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle ( Pictures and Powers: from the 16th to the 18th Century )

The visits last approximately 1 hour and are limited to 25 people.
