The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pons de Thomières (Hérault) was dismembered at the time of the wars of religion which did a great deal of damage in the region. Today the capitals of the cloister are to be found all over the world. The Crucifixion, with The Virgin and Child on the reverse side, shows just how high the quality of this workshop was. Its work can be related in particular to the work of the sculptors of the Roussillon area (towards the Mediterranean coast, around the Spanish border today).
