Apostle Holding a Book
This bust of an apostle comes from the decor of an altarpiece from Saint Etienne Cathedral in Toulouse. A double portico, topped with a baldachin was adorned with several lifesize sculptures on the theme of the death (the Dormition) and the Assumption of the Virgin. A drawing by Bénazet (1791), kept at the Museum of Old Toulouse shows the original placing. According to a contract concluded in 1532, this ‘Antique style’ altarpiece appears to be the work of Nicolas Bachelier. This bust, no doubt that of an apostle mourning the death of the Virgin, would in that case be one of the rare remnants of this prestigious set of works, destroyed in 1794.
