Saint Michael is represented in his role as the guardian of souls. On the right, a soul, represented as a naked child, clings to the Archangel to escape from the devil who is trying to seize it.This theme was very popular at the end of the Middle Ages as it reflected perfectly the concerns of the faithful. Although he dates from the last quarter of the 15th century, Saint Michael harks back to the International Gothic angels, with the disposition of his hair in broad curls, spread in a circle.Nowadays, the hideous, hairy devil is one of visiting children’s favourite figures!
