The academie
Long before museums in the modern sense were established in France or elsewhere, the Académie placed reception works on show, much in the same way as contemporary artistic institutions would do today. Because the Academie
gave autonomous instruction, the Reception works constitute more than a mere chronological listing of French painting. They also mark the artists' initiation into the Académie where the paintings were hung together in a permanent place of honour serving not only as visual archives but also as sources of inspiration for new generations.
