Scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist
Scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist is an Antwerp-style triptych from around 1530 which had been present in the great hall of the Toulouse Parliament since the Ancien Regime (pre-revolutionary France). The central panel represents the baptism of Christ with, in the background, preaching. The external panels were repainted at an unknown period whereas the internal panels are contemporary with the central panel. In this triptych, the landscape plays a key role, in the great tradition of Patinir, one of the northern inventors of landscape painting.
