Grisailles of Northern Europe

From Thesis to Painting

The works of Mignard, (Two paintings by this artist, The Christ with the read and Three muses belong to the collections of the musée des Augustins) Dieu, and Lemoyne illustrate half a century of the thesis frontispiece genre. These works were commissioned to the best painters of the time (Mignard and Lemoyne, as well as Le Brun, were appointed painters to the King) by descendants of the aristocracy. The painting, most often representing an allegorical subject and dedicated to King of France, was engraved and kept by the new doctor’s family.
The sketches by Stella (click here to discover the exhibition dedicated to Stella in 2007) and Collin de Vermont are for large polychrome compositions.

The gold cameo by Desportes was part of a notebook of models once belonging to the artist, intended for manufacture in Sèvres.
