Ancient and modern landscapes
With the arrival of the neo-classical period some forerunning landscape painters began to portray a romantic vision of nature at its wildest. In 1789, Hue painted La vue prise dans la forêt de Fontainebleau. Divided into on-the-spot sketches and highly constructed historical landscapes, the work of the Toulouse-born Valenciennes was a synthesis of the great aspirations of this period.
