All the themes treated by Jean-Paul Laurens reveal a deep republican conviction, which moved him to defend the values he attributed to the new regime:
Freedom (of expression and for the people), Equality (for everyone before the Law and Justice), Fraternity (between men irrespective of their political or religious beliefs).
A measure of his commitment can be seen in his production of the iconographical cycles in which Laurens analyses different facets of the same theme. His attachment to his southern identity was the impetus behind the subjects treated in paintings inspired by the Occitania (Languedoc) annals.
